Philosopher and practitioner, Sueyoon (aka Susie) moves between reflection and action - through practice and work.

She grew up in Korea 🇰🇷, spent her high school years in Beijing 🇨🇳, and is now based in Amsterdam 🇳🇱.

She is a researcher at CWI, the Dutch National Institute for Mathematics and Computer Science. She studies human interaction in immersive technologies (XR), exploring how they can foster human connection and creative expression.

As a child, she dreamed of becoming a spy 🕵🏻‍♀️ (or maybe a P.E. teacher), convinced they had to be fast, smart, and cool. She was sure she had at least two of those qualities. But she wasn’t rebellious enough, so she chose the safer alternative: studying design at a top engineering school, which, luckily, still counted as cool. (And by earning a yoga teacher certificate twenty years later, she realized she’d checked off that second dream too.)

That’s where her journey through design and technology began. Yet it was not as smooth as it sounds - she often felt adrift without one clear mastery. For years, she wrestled with where to stand between them. Moving alone to the Netherlands with no money - armed only with an exploratory spirit and a hunger to see the wider world - didn’t exactly make things easier.

In solitude, she began listening more carefully to her inner voice, which awakened her passion for the analogue. She immersed herself in books, spent time in museums and cinemas, drifted through stores and markets, crossed cities and borders, practiced yoga 🧘🏻‍♀️, trained body and mind on the mat and the court 🎾, painted on canvas 🎨, and wrote by hand. This only sharpened the tension between paths - sometimes filling her with doubt, but always widening her perspective.

Eventually, she came to see this duality as her mission: to connect and communicate between art, design, and technology. She is uniquely positioned to move across all three with rare fluency. Her next dream is to help shape how art and technology can serve a healthier, more fruitful society - while at the same time passionately embracing and enjoying the beautiful arts passed down by precursors.

(But hold on, does this still count as a ‘cultural’ spy? 🕵🏻‍♀️)
